Two very disparate tracks. One very Canadian DJ-producer. DJ A-Trak has come a long way from being the 13 year old DMC champ to an honorary member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz to spinning records on tour for Kanye West on "SNL" to making mash-up remixes with the likes of the Rub.

However, in each case, he definitely joined up with the ranks of each interest after it had become a burgeoning popular movement. A-Trak has a knack for being *gasp* trendy. He's got skills, but also knows how to connect with the right people at the right time...

The Little Brother beat, if not noted that it was produced by A-Trak, most would not assume such a fact. The Kid Sister track, though, is more of a ... insider-DJ type track. The kind of stuff you'd hear in one of those trendy NYC clubs that try to stay one step ahead of the game.

In the mid-90s, the Bay Area underground rap scene was run by a few syndicate-like groups. There were others here and there, sure, but the largest names were the Living Legends, Hieroglyphics and Bored Stiff. The Legends, which are composed of various rappers from up and down the California coast, have gone onto individual careers of varying success and still periodically reunite for group albums. Hieroglyphics were arguably the most famous of the groups, but their shimmer quickly faded after the home runs of "93 Til Infinity," "No Need For Alarm," "Fear Itself" and a stand up triple in "3rd Eye Vision."

But the last group, whatever happened to Bored Stiff? They were the most street of the backpacking superstars and had head bobbing, West Coast production style. One of the members, Equipto, went on to a reasonable solo career, many times pairing with fan favorite Andre Nickatina. But largely, we haven't heard from them much for about a decade.

Bored Stiff is back, though, with three new songs, and a pending album is set to drop in 2007. From the sounds of these two tracks I've provided, it sounds like they haven't abandoned their signature sound, for better or worse. In a post-hyphy, post-backpack world, can Bored Stiff hold up where few have persevered? MURS and Del are the light at the end of the tunnel.

Better than Wu-Tang Never... right? I saw Raek, Deck, GZA and Mr. Golden Arms U-God himself on Saturday night, backed by El Michels Affair, a 12 piece funk band (so they claim... i counted about 7 members on stage). Like always, they took forever to get on stage, albeit they were just anchoring the production competition that took place earlier that evening. The backpacks were in full effect, as the super rap nerds came to see the "select" members of Wu while on the other side of town, Trae and Clipse apparently set up shop and attracted, let's just say, the "CMJ Demographic." I heard it was good, though. But so was the Wu show. They tore it down with the live band. Anyway, this El Michels Affair shit is pure cut dope (Chef, get it?), and one of the nicest things I've heard in a minute.

How much money is Ghost making off making appearances on trendy Spank Rock-ish albums? Speaking of "CMJ Demographic".... I thought he was still gangsta, adding back the "Killah" to his name, but I have my doubts now. I wonder how much he knows the Canada/Falcon/fish posturing worked in some ironic-pseudo ignorant hip way (a la Dipset, but he can rap). Like the audio-version of BAPE here. Man. I'm not too mad at this track though. OK, I am. But anger makes me forget that I'm deeply insecure. Rawr.

There was a time in my life that I deplored acts such as Puff Daddy and Jay-Z. "No," said the former me. "Not Reasonable Doubt, but Vol. 1 and 2 are wack shit." Fast forward to 2006, I just copped Press Play off the internets and it's ok. I redownloaded No Way Out (I owe you a ten, Diddy) and found myself enjoying most of it. Even the powerful "All About the Benjamins" that ruled my junior high school dances enchanted my Jurassic 5-loving ass (heh) at the time. But a backpacker's gotta growned up, and here I am, bumping a P Diddy song that samples Tears for Fears. The Swollen Members must be so disappointed in me.

"We Gon Make It" has like, the same horns as that first Jay-Z leaked single. You can scroll down a few posts to compare notes. Damn, the mainstream is gonna catch onto sample spotting finally, because of these two fools. Good job, Just Blaze. (Fun Fact: RAPINJUSTICE began as a weak ass "sample biter" blog, you can check the archives)

"Testimonial" flips Tears for Fears, the song that was in Donnie Darko, "P Diddy Rock" has an a pretty good Timbaland beat and Shawnna and Twista ripping the blistering track, "Wanna Move" has Big Boi, Scar and Ciara. The last two tracks sound suspiciously similar as well.

Fatman Scoop feat. DJ Kool, EZ Rock - It Takes Two

Fatman Scoop is awesome. A late-night New York radio DJ staple, the scruffy voice of Mr. Scoop has become synonymous with hip hop club music, as he lends his adlibs to many "club remixes" of popular tracks. He screams, he chants, he draws the call-and-response. The most awesome thing is, he doesn't actually make the music or the actual "remixing" which, in this case, is inserting memorable breaks and clips from other songs on top of an instrumental. For instance, "Be Faithful" breaks into moments that harken back to the Beatnuts and Black Sheep, and "It Takes Two" is temporarily morphed into Grandmaster Flash's "The Message." All Scoop does, though, is yell and scream. And then he put all these "remixes" on an album, at least in Japan, because everybody knows those Japs will buy anything.

At the very least, people know Fatman Scoop for his hypeman work on Missy Elliot's "Lose Control," which is also collected on Scoop's appropriately titled "In the Club."

Simply Amazing.

Hi-Tek is still stuck on neo-soul. "Josephine" has an OK verse by Ghostface and Hi-Tek ain't sooo bad at rapping here on this song about some junkie chick. He doesn't have Kanye's ghostwriters, though. But there's way too much singing, like it's Kirk Franklin or something.

I don't really like it when producers shoehorn themselves into raps on their own albums, and "Music For Life" is a great example. Not that anyone comes particularly correct anyway, but Hi-Tek is particularly glaring. I'm going to assume that J Dilla's appearance is the answering machine message at the beginning of the track. Busta Rhymes does not rap, just talks.

It's worth noting, Hi-Tek pretty much bit J Dilla's style almost completely, especially listenin to these two tracks (and the ones on the 50 album). Listen to the filtered basslines and tight snares. Damn. He didn't sound like this when he was chillin with Talib, did he?

The second track speaks for itself. But the Trilladelphians, who are Low Budget (of Hollertronix) and some dude DSJ, conjure up some Baltimore House-ish remix of Yung Joc's "It's Goin Down" and then some radio DJ from Philly, DJ Freak Nasty* yells over it, Fatman Scoop style. Apparently the "Wu-Tang" is a dance. I'm totally disconnected. Though I did hear Low Budget spin a party a few weeks ago in New York, and he did not spin the "Wu Tang Dance Theme," despite it being at least a month old.

If you listen to the track, there is a specific "Wu-Tang Dance" and while the song doesn't tell you how to do it**, DJ Freak Nasty mentions YouTube*** and the Wu-Tang Dance. So I went on, to check it out and people got different ways of doing it. I mean, it's all sorta the same, but some get creative. I like the guys featured in the embedded video up there the best, if not only for them having a move that just might look like oral sex simulation between two men. No Kanye.

Did you guys know DJ Muggs (of Soul Assassins fame) has a Mashup show on Sirius? It's on Shade45 and it's called Mashup Mondays. I haven't heard it because I don't own a Sirius radio (who does?), but I bet it sucks. Because I've heard DJ Muggs' "mashups" and they just marry the newest rock tracks (Velvet Revolver, the White Stripes) with some random rap acapella. Sometimes he'll throw in a loop of some played-the-fuck-out classic rock track (Queen, Led Zeppelin) too.

The mere fact that the BPMs match up, does not mean they were made to be coupled, Muggs. Please, I beg of you, to stop. Because you've created a trend. Just like Hollertronix and DJ Z-Trip had former scratch nerds gearing up to "rock the party" through the combination of club and electro tracks with rock, rap, oldies and crazy ass shit like MIA and Baile Funk, you, DJ Muggs, have a following as well. And you have created a new style of mashup in America, one similar to the movement in Europe a few years back, of sticking together any two tracks that are remotely the same speed. I don't care if Yung Joc matches up with Panic! at the Disco. I don't care if Ludacris and the Red Hot Chili Peppers have the same beats per minute. I totally get it now when people say art isn't subjective, because your shit sucks. Now you got kiddies whining all over the nation, essentially staring at your retarded aural collage scoffing, "Pfft, I can do that." And now we're left with supposed backpacker producers joining together Atmosphere and System of a Down. Fuck this, I'm going to listen to some Weird Al.

I haven't listened to either of these tracks yet. Here are my predictions:

On "Everything I Love," Diddy and Nas ride a bouncy, poppy production tooled by Cee-Lo, who also provides hook duties. It's obvious that Nas ghostwrote Diddy's lines and is a suitable happy contrast for the "Hate Me Now" duo.

9th Wonder tinkers with his style a bit on "Crooklyn Dodgers," delivering his distinct-yet-groundbreaking sound. It's most welcome after 9th's countless remix albums, two or three Little Brother discs and an iPod full of guest productions. Mos Def sounds like he's stopped raiding Common's wardrobe. Memphis Bleek is lackluster than ever, and Jean Grae displays a competent but average verse over the slithering soul beat.

And if you already have checked for the um... Houston rapper... OK I don't know much about Trae, but his album, "Restless" isn't bad. Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

Trae is a southern rapper from Houston, Texas who is apart of the underground rap group Screwed Up Click with his cousin Z-Ro. He gained a name on the Houston Rap scene when he was featured on Z-Ro's album Look What You Did to Me. He co-founded the rap group Guerilla Maab which featured his cousin Z-Ro and his brother Dougie D.

So um... there you go. If you do know Trae already, I also provided those same cuts from his album but... SLAB-ed. Which stands for something. But really it just means chopped and skrewed.

"Real Talk" is a tour de force through Trae's world, with a rapid fire beat that makes you feel like you're on sherm and coke at the same time(I think. I've never done sherm, but this sounds like what I would probably hear. Although when I was 13 I imagined champagne tasted like Martinelli's Apple Cider, so take that how you will).

"Cadillac" is a rip roaring track with a lot of cameos.

The other two are exactly the same as stated above, but slower. Damn, I owe you guys a post sometime.

There have been a few (OK, two) people asking me how the name of this blog is pronounced. It's a valid but odd question: This site ain't famous enough for anybody to need to pronounce it out loud. Nobody's going to walk over to the next dorm (cuz that's who reads this shit, right? Stoner college kids?) and say "Hey did you check out RAPINJUSTICE the other day? It was awesome." Mainly because RAPINJUSTICE is not awesome, but also because nobody says that sort of thing. This isn't Fark or Pitchfork Media over here.

ANYWAY, I have also considered the pronunciation of this site before. The most obvious is "Rap Injustice" (which doesn't make much sense... what's the injustice?). Since I post rap music on here, that would seem like the right way. There is also "Rapin Justice," which suggests that I am currently raping justice (as an imperfect participle). Or the lastly, most common unfunny way, "Rap in Justice." Which again doesn't make sense but sounds like a line from the hip hop version of the pledge of allegiance.

These are ALL WRONG. Sorry guys. So what is the right answer? It is (drum roll please) "R.A. pin Just Ice." Yup. R.A. pin Just Ice. R.A. is short for R.A. The Rugged Man, who once made a song with Biggie, and Just Ice is a non-swearing gangsta rapper of the 80s. When thinking up a name for this site, I imagined these two relatively obscure rappers engaged in professional wrestling, and since R.A. is the big white boy, he gets the pin.

R.A.'s on the new Jedi Mind Tricks, but the best song off that album is the Sean Price one. And I linked to a video up there that has Just Ice rapping for the kids, though he's sandwiched waaaay in the back of the posse cut behind the Get Fresh Crew and Heavy D. What a predicament! (Fun Fact: That fat chick who raps used to be KRS-One's wife.) Now that everyone knows how to say my blog name, go outside and shout it to the world. Phase 1 in my plan for internet domination has begun. Muahahahaha.

You may remember Dipset-offshoot Purple City's Agallah from his minor underground novelty hit "Crookie Monster." I believe it's produced by Alchemist and has Agallah imitating Cookie Monster and defiling Sesame Street characters through the magic of rap. You may not remember Agallah. I didn't.

But he's back nonetheless, and his single, "New York Rydah Music" is produced by DJ Premier, so it's worth checking out. Premo submits a slower, lumbering, string-led and piano dotted production here. I only want to know why you would make a song about Muppets when you sort of look like a Muppet. I wouldn't want to welcome the comparison.

Sorry guys! I have no excuse for not posting, besides the fact that I have real life responsibilities now. But that never stopped me before. Anyway, if you've been keeping up with the XXL bloggers, you'll know that my hero (!) Sickamore blogged 31 posts in 31 days. What an amazing feat!

I've been inspired then, to post for a month. Yup! I'll post everyday for a month, with at least one song a day. Some posts might be short, with songs that might be old or that you've heard before (after all this is the internet, is there anybody who hasn't heard everything already?). But at the least I'll try to keep them obscure enough that they aren't burning up the charts like, right now. And hopefully I can bless you with some new shit that hasn't been uncovered yet.

The Crunk tribute to Radiohead isn't as bad as it sounds, and just tweaks Lil' Jon productions with a keyboard or something (probably Garageband or some shit). I'm an avid Radiohead fan, so I can pick up on most of the tunes. It might not be for people unfamiliar with the Oxfordshire quintet, though. Tracklisting and more info are here. To balance out that lame shit, here's more info on Matthew Africa's Twee Funk mix, courtesy of *cough* *COUGH* Fader *COUGH* *COUGH* Magazine. *cough* Excuse me! Anyway, Twee Funk is what the Jackson 5 inspired in the '70s, kind of like when they had all those kids rapping in the early '90s. Da Youngstas, Kriss Kross, all of them. It's pretty cool, even though the Fader sucks and is shady because they own a promotion company and put artists they promote on the cover of the mag. And they are hipsters, which tips the scales even more here. I think in England this mix might be considered lame, cuz of those weirdo Northern Soul nerds. Don't know what I'm talking about? Welp, this 10th edition of Kidz Bop was sort of weak from a comedy perspective. There was the drug-inspired love ballad by James Blunt, an awkward interpolation of the Black Eyed Peas and an awesomely performed Fort Minor song. But that's about it.

Here we got a Rihanna - SOS, and Ashlee Simpson's L-O-V-E. When Kidz Bop 8 came out, I was amazed at their rendition of "Since You've Been Gone," and noted many times that it could have probably been an actual radio single. "SOS" is this time arounds "Since You've Been Gone," but a lot worse. We also got Ashlee Simpson on here because she's Ashlee Simpson, and Kidz Bop just sounds so appropriate for her music. Congratulations on the new nose. And word to Jay-Z's booty call. Nice.

I can't be the only person who finds that album title hilarious. It's been a number of years since 3x Krazy broke up and Keak, our ol' pal Agerman here, and, uh, the other guy parted ways. Keak Da Sneak, as you know, owns a successful record label, sort of blew up on the national scene and lives on a farm in Sacramento. Agerman went to God. But much like all the other hip hoppers who decide to dedicate their lives to the big Emcee in the sky (Hammer, Murda Ma$e, uh, Run... Shawn J. Period?), they can't stay away for long, especially when their former potnas are rolling in dough and creating false idols for young, impressionable black youths to worship.

But Agerman's return is great. His album title rings of the humbleness of a man dedicated to God. As if we could ever forget one third of 3X Krazy. His understanding of the masses' fickle nature causes him to pose a simple question to his audience: Do you, in fact, remember him? In my head the tone is less horror-film "Remember me, bitch?" and more Steve Guttenberg.

Anyway, the front of the album cover, as you can see, says that his album includes a hit single entitled Dance. Since it's a hit, I'll post it. I haven't listened to it yet, but it's BOUND to be good, it says so on the cover! Welcome to mp3 blog Russian Roulette.

Asop feat. Slug - Moving at the Speed of Life You know that Living Legends thing I was writing about below? This track is on it and actually pretty good. It took a lot for me to type that.

A Tribe Called Quest - Lyrics to Go (Automator Remix) So ATCQ reunited for a freakin' videogame, NBA 2K7, because Phife Dawg really likes it, or something. Oh, well. Nobody really cares now. They got Automator to put together the soundtrack and he remixes this ATCQ classic, and it's actually nice. I heard the rest and it's pretty much garbage, even though it's got a crazy lineup of emcees, from San Quinn to Rhymefest to Ghostface. Read more here.

Back when I was really into going to shows, I saw my share of Living Legends' concerts. And every time, some backpacked douchebag would yell out "Sunsprayed!" when MURS or Eligh or Scarub took the stage. I think one time they performed it. "Sunsprayed," for the uninitiated, samples Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" bassline. It's just a beat and a bassline. I didn't think it was too creative or breathtaking back then, and I still don't now.

Fast forward to 2006, and the Legends' members (who have disparate levels of success like a rap Brat Pack) release a sampler "Legendary Music Vol. 1" to promote their solo releases for the second half of the year. They also throw on some unreleased and rare stuff to make the package complete. On here is a song by the 3MGs called "2010" and ... I think you know where I'm going with this... it samples Nirvana again. This time it's Cobain and Co.'s cover of David Bowie's "Man Who Sold the World" from the MTV Unplugged album (word to Jay-Z). Again, it's not super great, but I figured it was noteworthy. What can we expect next from this group? A loop of "I'm so horny" from "Lithium" a la E-40's "Yay Area"? Dare I say, mash-up fodder "Smells Like Teen Spirit"? I hope not.

Perhaps their affiliates could sample Nirvana's affiliates. Let's hear Lucky.I.Am (by the way is he related to Will.I.Am?) over a looped Hole song, or the Grouch chopping up the Foo Fighters. Hurry up, guys.

Edit: I just have to point out, I really like how the producer (Eligh?) added the synth at about 1:24 to "2010" that emulates the cello on the original song.

A lot of people are accusing Josh Davis of jumping on some sort of trend or bandwagon with his new album and its large Bay Area rap presence. This shouldn't really matter. I know for a fact that Traxxamillion used to make self-described "backpacker" beats until he picked up a Korg. The only thing in question should be the quality of the beats. And Shadow can make a beat. True fanboys knew of Shadow's affinity for Mannie Fresh, and astute listeners could already hear on "The Private Press" that Shadow had begun accenting his dusty breaks with a bag of electronic tricks more suited for the likes of Aphex Twin. "The Outsider" is just logical progression.

While Shadow can craft a more complex, intricate and dense beat than anyone in the game today, not all the "hyphy" tracks are winners. And almost none of the other weird sing-songy tracks (on Soulstrut someone described the album as "half hyphy, half Coldplay") are good. His schizophrenic album should've been split into two, and then the shitty one just thrown away or released on Koch. The songs I haven't provided for you, you can or have been able to find elsewhere on the internets.

The Federation - I Only Wear My White Tees Once (Remix) "18 Dummy" finally got an official release, and this is the b-side. It's got, like, rappers from LA on it. Do I hear an Alkaholik?
Nas - Where Ya'll At You've probably already heard this, but just in case you haven't, here it is. New Nas. Not so impressive. Beats could be better, and the chorus is weak rehash of his past lines.
DJ Shadow feat. Q-Tip, Lateef the Truth Speaker - Enuff It's a shitty bitrate, but it's worth checking out. Bol's boy has a review of the upcoming album.
Rhymefest - My Beat Rhymefest is mad that he has to pay for beats. And calls out names. Ooooh. What a baby. This is sorta gimmicky in that Skillz "Ghostwriter" way.
Pimp C feat. Mike Jones, Bun B - Pourin' Up Honestly, I don't know why I'm sharing this with you.
Chamillionaire feat. DJ Quik, the Game - Ridin' (West Coast remix) Just like the Federation track, this tries to establish a Los Angeles audience by sticking West Coast rappers on an existing hit. Whatever. This chorus is stupid-catchy though, in an embarrassing caught-singing-on-the-bus way.
Ludacris - War with God This is a T.I. Diss. Apparently. Kinda zzzzz. I wish Luda would start making good records again, is all.
T.I. vs. Jimi - What You Joe The Riddim Method comes with the smarts. Now I just need a Lil Flip related song to complete the Dirty South Pentagram and open up the gates of hip hop hell.

Dr. Octagon - Aliens OK I already posted this before, but it had all these promo voiceovers on it. Now it's clean. Plus, the rest of "The Return of Dr. Octagon" isn't that good.
The AB's - Boombox These guys, formerly named Asamov, put out an aiight album a few months ago. Nobody heard it, but it wasn't bad. Now they changed their name, which sinks them into deeper obscurity. They hang out with the likes of Mr. Lif and 9th Wonder, pending that "hang out" means "probably paid them to collaborate with."
Braille - Sonset I really feel weird listening to Christian rap, probably in the same way most people feel weird listening to Christian rock, but it just feels weirder. The worst part is, most of the time you probably can't tell if it's Christian or just some nerdy white dude with dreads rapping. And sometimes they get dope beats. Like this song, produced by Count Bass D. I remember Jay Seagraves of Hip Hop Infinity used to stick these dudes in Braille (is the MC like manCHILD or some shit?) on his top 50 MCs of the year list. It made me half interested and half stupider reading that shit.

Yes, it's those Fine Young Cannibals. "She drives me crazy / Woo hoo." Those guys. And that's De La Soul Prince Paul, not some house DJ who happened to have the same name. The Wolfmother remix is by the same people who brought you "Since You Left Me," which is a sublime album, and countless other remixes worth your money (or time downloading). This one isn't as good as some of the other ones I've heard by them, but it's still weird. Wolfmother seems to be touted as the next Led Zeppelin, and the original mix of "Woman" is played on rock radio here.

Either way, I would rather be listening to these songs than Dem Franchize Boyz and Korn collaborations.

Ugh. I've never heard the Korn song, but I have heard the song I posted. This is going to be (already is?) a dismal failure. I remember when Korn teamed up with Lil Jon or whatever, and that shit was wack too. In fact, 90% of all rap-rock supergroup combos (or in this case, a rap-rap-rock combo?) suck. Jay-Z and Linkin Park? No. Run DMC and Aerosmith? Corny as fuck. In fact, not only do the collaborations mostly eat ass on their own, the movement has helped paved the way for the worst possible rap-and-rock-influenced groups in history. We didn't get 10 Becks, we got 20 Limp Bizkits/Biohazards/Kid Rocks.

The only dope one was when Public Enemy and Anthrax did "Bring the Noize." And the De La Soul song from the "Judgment Night" soundtrack. And that one song on the Handsome Boy Modeling School with dude from the Mars Volta (speaking of which). I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but my brain is still recovering from the Korn-Franchize audio abortion.

Jurassic 5 feat. Dave Matthews Band - Work it Out

OK, so this one is too easy. The past few days, on bbs and other blogs, I've seen links to the Jurassic 5 MySpace page, which features this track. The comments board is pretty hilarious, filled with mostly backpack sycophants eager to declare praise that nobody will ever see. But elsewhere on the 'net, the track has been almost universally bashed. This is because nobody likes J5 in 2006 and DMB has been associated with the striped shirt and sandals crowd.

Even at their best, nowadays Jurassic 5 is a guilty pleasure, with their corny sing-songy choruses, tepid raps and embarrassing fanbase. Add Dave Matthews on top (I hate Dave Matthews) and this song becomes a hater's paradise. However, this song isn't that bad. Sure, it has the boring, overtly positive, in-your-face message, a snore-worthy beat and a wanky guitar, but I wouldn't say I hate it more than, say, that Brooke Hogan and Paw Wa' song. And the best part of this is that nobody will have to probably hear this after a few months goes by (I'm pretty sure alternative radio, which would cater to J5 fans, hates DMB more than us).

This is the first time I've noticed Cut Chemist jumped ship from Jurassic 5. I remember reading an interview with him after he said he finished "Thin Line" with Mya or Nelly Furtado or whomever, and he said something along the lines of "Wow, we cut our first R&B song--I mean, it's great that we're doing new things, but wow." And that's when I knew it was basically over.
